| Now we set the stage for the induction. We consider Carla to be a resistant subject, that will follow instructions to a limited degree, but at the same time will attempt to twist any instruction away from the trance. This type of person believes in hypnosis, but wants to feel stronger than the hypnotist. Obviously, if we butt heads with her, figuratively speaking, we won't get anywhere, so instead we give her a confusion technique, and throw as much information her way as possible. One thing to notice from the beginning of this clip, is how she mimics my hand motion, indicating a high degree of suggestibility. As I continue to talk with her, I ask her questions to help me understand her internal map of the idea of hypnosis, of how she expects it to feel like, of how she expects a hypnotized person to act. Often with a new subject, it's easier to simply tell them these things, and they will often accept it, however, with this subject, her ideas are pretty well entrenched. Later, in the conversation, I am lucky enough to encounter some of the techniques that she uses to clear her head and to put herself to sleep. Using their own internal techniques, externally can be very beneficial to causing the trance state, however, with some more paranoid subjects, attempting to do this can completely scare them off. | ||

| Now, I begin Carla's induction using the temple rub technique. Having already matched her non-serious and giggly mood, we've established sort of a mirror of each other. Now as I start to bring it down a notch, she finds herself mimicking me. Also, notice how I give her so much to do, that instead of the cool, collected, "yeah we'll see about that" attitude that she described with previous hypnotist, I'm now getting a "sorry, I'm trying" attitude, which places her on the defensive. With some subjects, who view the hypnotic act as being sort of a power struggle of sorts, this is important. As a last ditch mechanism against losing control, she's going to be extremely giggly . Instead of fighting this, and telling her not to laugh, which she's going to continue doing anyways, I tell her to laugh, and even remind her to do so when she doesn't. This accomplishes two things, first it gets her used to following my instructions, and second, it adds to a degree of confusion. From time to time, I disrupt the mood a little. The reason for this is to keep her off balance. This serves to disrupt her idea of what a hypnotic trance should be like, and further demonstrates my growing control over her and the situation. Then I switch the induction strategy to a completely different once, and as Carla attempts to adjust, she finds herself responding very well to my suggestions that her eyes are getting heavy and closing. Then when I take the induction to the next symbolic level, there's a momentary surprised response, which I ignore, and she then complies. | ||
